Leveling by Product Mix

Though in practice production leveling by product mix is a different approach than leveling by volume, the two methods may be used together as costs dictate. Leveling by product mix is largely unique to organizations that employ the pull production system and that benefit from short line changeovers such as those gained from a SMED program. The flexible nature of small batch production, coupled with the ability to change lines frequently for a low cost, compounds flexibility further still.

Due to the high degree of flexibility, a wider variety of fluctuating demand for various goods can be fed into production without the significant increase in costs associated with more traditional production lines. To handle the complicated scheduling, a kanban production system guided by a detailed heijunka box maintains evenness of flow throughout the entire production line and efficiently coordinates complex production schedules.
